What we ripped out to add a second player

Local multiplayer was not something I added last night. It was mostly something I removed. The codebase had quietly assumed there would only ever be one of you.

MOSTLYDELETION

Local multiplayer is not something I added last night. It is mostly something I removed.

To get a second human on the pitch I had to rip out:

  • Two separate player classes, one for "my team" and one for "the AI's," merged into one.
  • The assumption that the human is always the home team. That was hiding in about a dozen places wearing different disguises: passing, switching, throw-ins, goal kicks, corners, even the radar.
  • 22 hand-typed goal positions that would have been wrong at half time anyway.

The codebase had quietly assumed there would only ever be one of you. Now there can be two.

Shipped: one player class · no home-team assumption · derived goal positions
